A man was shot dead Wednesday evening by a police officer, after attacking two people with a knife, including one fatally, in the center of Bordeaux. 20 minutes takes stock of the investigation.
What happened ?
Shortly before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, near the Miroir d’eau, a popular tourist spot on the quays of Bordeaux, a man suddenly stabbed two people, one of whom fatally. The second victim was seriously injured but his life is not in danger. In a video posted on social networks, we see the individual bending down as if to stab him. The bottom of the stage is hidden by a hedge, but we hear shouts “Stop!” “.
The attacker then fled, but was caught by police officers at the stone bridge. A police officer opened fire and shot him dead. On another video, we see the police officer aiming a machine gun at the individual, who collapses and rolls down a few steps before sliding to the ground. The entire perimeter was quickly cordoned off by the police. The circulation of trams, buses and bicycles was prohibited on the stone bridge at the foot of which the attacker was shot.
What were the attacker’s motives?
While terrorist threats had been addressed to the authorities, as part of the quarter-finals of the Champions League which took place on Wednesday evening, notably in Paris, the word “attack” quickly resonated in people’s minds. This avenue, however, was quickly ruled out. “There were no a priori Islamist comments made by the author,” indicated a source close to the investigation.
“It appears that the starting point was a dispute over the alcohol consumption of the two stabbing victims. » According to several testimonies, the attacker actually accused two Algerians of drinking alcohol. Witnesses also spoke of a fight that went bad.
Who are the victims ?
The victims are of Algerian nationality. The deceased man, aged 36, was named Daoud. According to South West, he was with an acquaintance near the Miroir d’eau when he encountered the attacker, with whom a virulent exchange began. The injured person is believed to be around twenty years old. The identity of the attacker, described by witnesses as a “turbaned” man, has not yet been revealed this Thursday.

The public prosecutor Frédérique Porterie went to the site on Wednesday evening, but did not communicate to the attention of the press. Information on the investigation is expected this Thursday. “The judicial investigation is underway,” the mayor of Bordeaux Pierre Hurmic simply declared on Twitter. It is the Bordeaux interdepartmental judicial police service (SIPJ) which is currently responsible for the investigations.
