He appeared way too early, but without a tie. On Monday, Steffen Hebestreit differentiated both from his predecessor Steffen Seibert, who, although always wearing a tie, occasionally rushed up the stairs to the conference room of the Federal Press Conference at the last minute or even later. Even if you have rarely seen Hebestreit differently in its various previous uses, his open shirt collar on this Monday was to be understood as a small statement: That the title and task may have changed, but not the type who perceived them. Or, as Angela Merkel would have put it: “You know me.”
