40 percent for cuts in support for Ukraine

The federal government wants to approve the federal budget for 2025 in July. In a survey, people were asked where they thought savings could be made.
According to a recent report, people in Germany see the dispute over the federal budget Survey by the opinion research institute Insa Potential savings, among other things, in support of Ukraine. 40 percent of those surveyed answered the question “Where do you think the government should save money?”, as “Bild” reports. 38 percent mentioned development aid, 36 percent said that citizens’ money should be saved. There were ten fields to choose from in which savings could be made. Multiple entries were possible.
Few survey participants therefore want to save in the areas of pensions (6 percent), benefits for families (8 percent) and economic development (9 percent). According to the survey, 16 percent are in favor of savings in defense and the Bundeswehr. 10 percent of respondents answered that the government should not save money.
The federal government wants to approve the 2025 federal budget in July. Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said on Friday that the expected date would be July 3rd.
According to the latest tax estimate, the federal, state and local governments are expected to receive 995.2 billion euros in the coming year – 21.9 billion euros less than assumed in autumn 2023. Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) then again criticized the “exorbitant” spending requests from the cabinet and emphasized that there would be no financial leeway in the foreseeable future.
