What city children learn in Munich school gardens – Munich

How do you fertilize properly? When do you harvest what? And is that weed?: Many city children only know their vegetables from the supermarket, but more and more often they can try their hand at gardening at Munich schools – experts and parents provide help.

Monday afternoon, 2 p.m. School is already over for most of the students at the Wilhelm-Hausenstein-Gymnasium. Not for the members of the Schulgarten AG. When the sun is shining, they set out for their field. The eight students have a tight schedule: they want to completely weed the vegetable patch this afternoon so that they can plant it the following week. They don’t have much time for this, only about an hour, then they have to go home again. The students get started right away, get pruning shears, watering cans and rakes from the tool shed. Then they split up into groups: Some pull the weeds in the bed, others set up bamboo poles to support beans, and a third group takes care of the hedge that borders the bed.
