“Wetten, dass…?”: Gottschalk with Schweinsteiger faux pas

Bastian Schweinsteiger will be a guest on Saturday evening with his wife Ana Ivanović in Thomas Gottschalk’s last “Wetten,dass..?” program.

Even before the 2014 soccer world champion was invited onto the stage, his name was mentioned for the first time. The reason: Thomas Gottschalk once referred to actor Matthias Schweighöfer as “Matthias Schweinsteiger” in the first minutes of the show.

During Schweighöfer’s appearance, the film “Girl You Know It’s True”, in which the 42-year-old plays the role of music producer Frank Farian, was introduced.

After the trailer for the film adaptation of the rise of the 1980s pop duo Milli Vanilli was shown, Gottschalk said: “Matthias Schweinsteiger as Frank Farian.”

The star presenter’s faux pas was picked up by many viewers – some commented on it with amusement X. Actor Marcus Mittermeier wrote: “I thought I had misheard. But you heard it too…”

Shortly afterwards, Gottschalk made another mistake after Schweinsteiger and Ivanovic sat down next to him.

Although he is not crazy about football, he emphasized that he “knows a lot of footballers. And some you will never forget. Günter Netzer, Franz Beckenbauer, Lothar Matthäus and also Bastian Schweinsteiger.”

But there are also “many football heroes that football fans can name,” added Gottschalk.

And then it got strange: “For example, I had to write it down, Uwe Bein. There was once a world champion (1990, editor’s note) named Uwe Bein.”

Schweinsteiger nodded knowingly – still. Because Gottschalk continued his sentence: “Or the great Lars Riedle, for example.” Schweinsteiger then looked a little surprised – and he wasn’t the only one.

Because once again many viewers in front of the television sets asked themselves who Gottschalk meant by this.

The former discus thrower Lars Riedel? Or Karl-Heinz “Kalle” Riedle, who also became world champion with Germany in 1990?
