Status: 07/26/2021 12:25 p.m.

The extreme weather conditions in Germany continue. While the disaster areas in the west are not affected this time, there are new storms in the north, south and east. A calming down of the situation is not in sight.

Around one and a half weeks after the devastating flood disaster with at least 179 deaths in western Germany, extreme weather conditions are reported from large parts of Germany. Although the regions in Rhineland-Palatinate are not affected this time, there were strong storms in other regions of the country.

Deaths in Saxony and Bavaria

In Berlin, Saxony, Brandenburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Upper Bavaria, numerous cellars and streets were flooded from Sunday evening in heavy rain. At least two people were killed.

In Weißwasser, Saxony, a 67-year-old died after being fatally electrocuted while pumping out his cellar. In Eglfing, Upper Bavaria, a hunter was found dead in a forest after his high seat was knocked down by a gust of wind.

The Berlin fire brigade went out on around 250 weather-related missions in the evening. In addition to full basements and flooded streets, tunnels were also full and trees fell. There were also several weather-related missions in the Segeberg district (Schleswig-Holstein). Strong thunderstorms with strong gusts of wind caused a series of damage in the Schwarz region (Mecklenburg Lake District). There was also a rail line closure at Güstrow.

Violent storms were also reported from Bavaria. In Schlehdorf in the Upper Bavarian district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, around 43 liters of rain fell on the square meter at 6 p.m., said the German Weather Service (DWD). According to the fire brigade, there were 87 weather-related missions in the Weilheim district, 18 in the Bad Tölz district and 35 in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district. A church tower was covered in Huglfing, and a tree fell on a car in Habach. Two people were slightly injured.

DWD warns of further storms

Overall, it remains thunderstorm in Germany, as the DWD announced. Local rainfall of 25 to 40 liters per square meter is possible, in some cases even more extreme amounts of rainfall of up to 60 liters.

According to the weather service, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Hamburg, northern Brandenburg and a narrow strip in northern Lower Saxony are affected. At the same time, the meteorologists also expected severe thunderstorms with rain amounts of up to 40 liters per square meter as well as storms and hail in parts of southern Germany. This was especially true for southern Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia.
