The situation on Bavaria’s roads is easing – train traffic is disrupted

During the night there were only minor accidents on Bavaria’s roads. It was initially unclear when trains would be able to run at Munich Central Station again. Munich Airport was also still at a standstill.
Despite continued wintry weather, the situation on the roads has improved Southern Bavaria calms down at night. The authorities only reported minor accidents; there were no serious injuries or deaths.
“A few trees still fall down, but there were only accidents with sheet metal damage,” said a spokesman for the Upper Bavaria South police headquarters. According to a spokesman, the accident in Lower Bavaria was also “typical for the time of year”. The night was similarly quiet on the streets in northern Upper Bavaria and Swabia, as the respective police headquarters announced.
It wasn’t just Bavaria that was affected by the winter weather. There were also weather-related problems on the roads in some areas in northern Germany. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a car left a snow-covered road and crashed into a tree. The two occupants were seriously injured in the accident.
Train traffic and flight operations continue to be disrupted
Despite the more relaxed traffic situation in Bavaria, there were still no trains running at Munich Central Station in the early morning. A spokesman said Deutsche Bahn would like to announce in the morning when operations will resume. Munich Airport has also not yet announced whether it will reopen as planned. As planned, the airport initially suspended flight operations until 6 a.m. due to the weather conditions.
There will be no further fresh snow in large parts of Bavaria on Sunday. According to the German Weather Service, flakes will only fall in isolated cases. Several centimeters of fresh snow are only expected in the eastern low mountain ranges and the Alps. In the ridge areas there are also snow drifts and a significant risk of avalanches. The meteorologists expect lows of minus 6 to minus 9 degrees. South of the Danube, temperatures could be between minus 10 and minus 15 degrees in some areas. It will remain cold on Monday and Tuesday, but snow is only expected to fall sporadically.
Weather conditions are easing
Things will look similar in some parts of Germany in the coming days. Some occasional snowfall is expected today in Lower Saxony, on the North Sea coast and between the Ore Mountains and the Harz Mountains. On Monday the flakes should slowly turn into raindrops. However, it is expected to remain dry from Berlin to southern Bavaria. Further rain is forecast in the west and southwest on Tuesday. The weather service is also expecting black ice here.
On Saturday the winter weather brought parts of Bavaria to a standstill. Snow and black ice led to accidents and long traffic jams on the motorways, and Munich and Memmingen airports temporarily suspended flight operations. There were no trains running on numerous railway routes, and travelers had to spend the night on trains in Ulm and Munich on Saturday night. FC Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga home game against 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday afternoon was also canceled.
