March 1st marks the start of meteorological spring. According to the forecasts, a cold snap is not in sight. A low over Western Europe is ensuring a particularly mild start to the new season.

Greeted with unusually mild weather Germany is celebrating meteorological spring and saying goodbye to winter temperatures. “The unusually mild spring weather will continue in the coming days,” said Christian Herold from the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach. “The friendliest day will be Sunday.”

However, the warm air is accompanied by a cloudy spring sky. The weather will remain mild for the time being, said the meteorologist. “It will be a little cooler next week, but there is no return of winter in sight.”

On Friday the sky is expected to be mostly cloudy, with the occasional chance of rain. According to the forecast, temperatures will rise to 8 to 14 degrees. It can be slightly windy in the east and south of the country, and a little stronger in the west.

Clouds, rain, sun

For Saturday, the meteorologists expect a lot of clouds and some rain, and the sun will appear at times. The maximum values are between 11 and 17 degrees, at the sea below 10 degrees. In the Alps, squalls may occur on some peaks.

According to the DWD, it will be sunnier again on Sunday. From the Emsland to the High Rhine it remains cloudy with some rain, otherwise clear and cloudy. According to the DWD, long hours of sunshine can be expected, especially in the southeast. It remains warm, with temperatures climbing to 18 degrees on the edge of the Alps. In the Alps, hurricane-like gusts are expected to occur on the peaks and strong stormy gusts in the valleys.

Meteorological spring begins on March 1st and ends on May 31st. For statistical reasons, meteorologists expect exactly three months for all seasons. Summer begins on June 1st – at least from a meteorological point of view. The astronomical or calendar start of spring this year is on March 20th. Last year, spring in Germany began with wintry weather and lots of sun.
