Weather: Heat record in Middle Franconia – Bavaria

The people of Bavaria experienced another hot summer weekend with almost unbearable heat in many places. Thunderstorms later brought cooling down, especially in Franconia, major damage caused by storms was not initially known, although at least twelve people were injured.

Möhrendorf-Kleinseebach in the district of Erlangen-Höchstadt is now known nationwide as the place where the highest temperature of the year so far was measured on Saturday. The German Weather Service (DWD) registered 38.8 degrees Celsius in the Kleinseebach district not far from the Regnitz on Saturday, as a DWD meteorologist said based on preliminary data. In Kitzingen in Lower Franconia it was 37.8 degrees. The previous record for this year was held on the Sunday before last (July 9) with 38.0 degrees in Waghäusel-Kirrlach in Baden-Württemberg.

At an outdoor company party in Middle Franconia, twelve people were injured, one seriously, a police spokesman said on Sunday. The revelers in Gutenstetten (Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim district) were surprised by the storm on Saturday evening. The storm tore several umbrellas and pavilions from their anchors. The flying objects hit some of those present.

Despite the tropical heat, many people went outside at the weekend: They looked for cooling in lakes, pools or rivers. In the next few days, according to the DWD, the warm and humid air will bring showers and thunderstorms, especially in southern Bavaria.
