When will there be the first snow this year? In some areas this could happen in the coming days. But in many places the sleigh still has to stop.

Deep “Niklas” will cause changeable, partly stormy weather in the coming days and will also bring the first snow for some areas.

The snowfall line will drop to medium altitudes on Friday. On Saturday night, the showers could even fall as snow down to low altitudes, says meteorologist Sebastian Schappert from the German Weather Service (DWD). Offenbach. “However, in many places it will not be enough for sledding.” The snow would melt too quickly due to the temperatures and the remaining ground heat.

However, things look different in the Ore Mountains and especially in the Alps. “Precipitation accumulates there, which usually falls as snow and can last for a long time,” says Schappert.

The forecasts in detail:

On Thursday the sky will be mostly cloudy with occasional rain or drizzle. South of the Danube, however, it often remains sunny and dry after the fog has cleared. The maximum values reach 9 to 13 degrees in the northern half and 4 to 8 degrees in the south. There will also be a moderate to fresh wind blowing from the southwest to the west, with widespread squalls expected in the north. At sea and on higher peaks there may be severe squalls or gale-force winds.

The DWD is predicting a rapid change of sun, clouds and numerous showers for Friday. There may be occasional short sleet thunderstorms. Above 400 to 500 meters, precipitation usually falls as snow. Longer-lasting snowfall is expected in the Alps. Temperatures reach 4 to 10 degrees. There is a strong gusty wind blowing from the west, later turning to the northwest. Stormy gusts are expected near the showers, and heavy squalls are expected on the North Sea and in the higher mountains.

According to the forecasts, it will continue to be changeable on Saturday with lots of showers – in the west as rain, otherwise as snow or sleet. In the north and northeast the sun also shines at times. There is persistent snowfall in the Ore Mountains and the Alps.
