Ver.di has called on aviation security staff at some airports to go on strike again on Thursday and Friday. All takeoffs in Hamburg were canceled on Thursday, and Hanover Airport, among others, was affected on Friday. A strike by Lufthansa flight attendants is still ongoing today.

The service union ver.di is continuing its strikes in the aviation industry. On Thursday, she is calling on aviation security staff at several airports nationwide to go on an all-day strike. At Hamburg Airport, employees who work in passenger checks, people and goods checks, cargo checks and in service areas should also stop work, as ver.di explained on Tuesday. According to information, the strike is scheduled to begin this evening at 10 p.m. and last until 10 p.m. on Thursday. A rally at Hamburg Airport is also planned for Thursday morning.

Hamburg Airport cancels all takeoffs on Thursday

Hamburg Airport has canceled all takeoffs with passengers on Thursday because of the warning strike. The airport announced on Tuesday evening that 141 planned departures were affected. Passengers were asked to contact their airline and not come to the airport. It can also be assumed that the after-effects of the strike will still be felt on Friday and thus at the start of the holidays in Hamburg.

Planes could land on Thursday. “Nevertheless, there may be flight cancellations and significant delays throughout the day for arrivals at Hamburg Airport due to the ver.di strike,” it said in a statement. Because of the strike, no early check-in is possible today or Thursday. Originally, 286 flights were planned for Thursday – 141 departures and 145 arrivals – with a total of around 40,000 passengers. In addition to Hamburg, Berlin, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe/Baden Baden and Cologne airports were also affected on Thursday.

Strike at Hanover Airport also on Friday

It is now clear that several German airports will also be on strike on Friday. This was announced by Hanover Airport. No departures are possible there on Friday from midnight to 12 p.m. Arrivals should not be affected. Hannover Airport asks all affected passengers to contact their airline or tour operator. According to ver.di, Dortmund, Weeze, Dresden and Leipzig airports are also affected, but Hamburg is not.

Lufthansa flight attendants are also on strike

Passengers are still affected by the strike by cabin crew at Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cityline in Munich. The UFO union has called on them to go on strike until 11 p.m. 400 flights and around 50,000 passengers are affected. In Hanover, five departures to Munich and five flights from Munich are therefore canceled today. In Hamburg, eleven departures and arrivals of LH flights to and from Munich have been canceled. On Tuesday, Frankfurt was already affected by the cabin crew strike. Several flights to Hamburg and Hanover were canceled as a result. At the same time, negotiations with ver.rdi for Lufthansa employees on the ground are to continue from today.

Aviation security: Ver.di wants 2.80 euros more per hour

Collective bargaining in the aviation security industry concerns the working conditions of around 25,000 employees of private security service providers. On behalf of the Federal Police, they check passengers, staff and luggage at the entrances to the security area. So far, five rounds of negotiations in the collective bargaining dispute have failed to produce any results. Ver.di is calling for an hourly wage increase of 2.80 euros over a period of twelve months, with overtime bonuses starting more quickly from the first hour of overtime. According to their own information, the employers from the Federal Association of Aviation Security Companies (BDLS) have offered 2.70 euros in three stages with a term of 24 months. In addition to compensating for inflation, this also means an increase in real wages, explained BDLS negotiator Frank Haindl. A sixth hearing is scheduled for March 20th.

UFO calls for better pay for Lufthansa employees

The UFO union is essentially demanding 15 percent more money for the approximately 18,000 cabin employees at Lufthansa and the almost 1,000 employees at Cityline with a contract term of 18 months. She also wants to achieve an inflation compensation bonus of 3,000 euros and higher allowances. In the separate collective bargaining negotiations, the union rejected the respective offers as inadequate. UFO emphasized that the group had just announced record results of almost 1.7 billion euros in net profit last week.
