For Ukraine, the Russian breakthrough on the front in Donbass is so far only a small, albeit significant and threatening, military defeat. For the West, it is perhaps a final warning: the recent Russian successes show that a victory for Moscow in this war is not an unlikely scenario. The result would be the death and displacement of millions of people, and the consequences would be felt not only in Kiev, but as far away as Brussels, Washington and other capitals.
