America is firmly on Ukraine’s side – with this message the chairwoman of the US House of Representatives, Pelosi, surprisingly visited Kyiv and promised help to the Ukrainian President Zelenskyj.
The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, paid an unannounced visit to Kyiv and spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. A spokesman for Pelosi said: “Our delegation has traveled to Kyiv to send an unequivocal and resounding message to the whole world: America stands firmly on the side of Ukraine.”
“Till the Fight Is Done”
Pelosi said she wanted to thank the Ukrainians “for their fight for freedom,” according to a video released by the Ukrainian presidency. “We promise to be here for you until the fight is over.” The Speaker of the House of Representatives also reiterated in a statement “that more US aid is on the way.” Washington is currently working on implementing the additional support of 33 billion dollars (around 31 billion euros) for Ukraine requested by President Joe Biden from Congress.
A week ago, Blinken visited Kyiv with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. In their talks with Zelenskyy, they pledged further US support against the invasion of Russian forces. Biden announced on Thursday that he would ask Congress to approve an additional $33 billion for Ukraine. 20 billion of that should be used for military aid, about 8.5 billion for economic aid.
Contribution to the “Protection of Sovereignty”
For his part, Zelenskyy thanked the United States on Twitter for their contribution “to protecting the sovereignty and integrity of our state”. He spoke of a “signal of strong support from the United States, the people and Congress”. The visit illustrated that the US played a leading role in supporting Ukraine in the war against Russia.
At the same time, he published the video that shows him with Pelosi flanked by armed soldiers in front of the presidential building in Kyiv and during the joint conversation.
According to US information, Pelosi was accompanied by a congressional delegation, and she then wanted to travel to Poland.
Flashing assures further support
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has reiterated Washington’s continued “firm support” for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. In a conversation with his Ukrainian colleague Dmytro Kuleba on Saturday evening, following a statement from the State Department, Blinken informed about the forthcoming return of US diplomats, initially to Lviv in the coming week and to Kyiv as soon as possible.
