Roland Emmerich’s new historical blockbuster in series form starts in the summer. Amazon Prime Video will show the ten episodes from mid-July.

Amazon Prime Video has announced the release date for the new historical drama “Those About to Die”. As the streaming service announces, Roland Emmerich’s (68) series will be available on the platform from July 19th in several territories – including several European countries, Canada, Australia and India.

In the USA, “Those About to Die” is broadcast by Peacock. According to the announcement, all of the ten episodes will be available for viewing one day after the US launch. The series is inspired by the non-fiction book of the same name by the writer Daniel P. Mannix (1911-1997), which also served as a source of inspiration for Ridley Scott’s (86) blockbuster “Gladiator”. Emmerich, known for bombast action such as “Independence Day”, “The Day After Tomorrow” or “Moonfall”, directed “Those About to Die” together with his colleague Marco Kreuzpaintner (47, “The Collini Case”).

What is “Those About to Die” about and who is in it?

The new historical series is intended to take viewers into the world of gladiator fights and chariot races in Rome in 79 AD – into a world dominated by corruption, striving for power and bloody entertainment for the bored population.

The cast consists of numerous well-known faces from the film and series world. Sir Anthony Hopkins (86) plays Emperor Vespasian, Tom Hughes (39) becomes Titus Flavianus and Sara Martins plays Cala. “Game of Thrones” star Iwan Rheon (38) plays Tenax, Dimitri Leonidas (36) plays Scorpus and Rupert Penry-Jones plays Marsus. Gabriella Pession (46) plays Antonia and the German actor Emilio Sakraya (27) plays Xenon.
