Scholz makes a government statement on “One year of change”.

A good year after the Russian attack on Ukraine and the associated reorientation of German security policy, Chancellor Olaf Scholz wants to take stock today in the Bundestag. 25 minutes are scheduled for his government statement entitled “One year of turning point”, followed by a 90-minute debate.

Three days after the start of the Russian attack on February 24, 2022, Scholz described the event as a “turning point” in a special session of the Bundestag and announced extensive additional spending for the military. In the summer, parliament passed a special fund of 100 billion euros for the Bundeswehr.

Zelenskyj praises Ukrainians for surviving the winter

The Ukrainian government has paid tribute to the country’s citizens for surviving a “difficult” winter together in the face of systematic Russian attacks. “We got over this winter,” said President Volodymyr Zelenskyj in his daily evening speech. Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba had previously spoken of the “most difficult winter in our history” that the Ukrainians had survived.

Zelenskyy said the winter was “a very difficult time” given the massive Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. “And every Ukrainian has experienced this difficulty, but we were still able to provide Ukraine with energy and heat.” The head of state added that there is still “a threat to the energy system”.
