Wanderer crashes on the Watzmannlaabl and dies – Bavaria

The police found a dead man in the Berchtesgaden Alps. It has not yet been confirmed whether this is a 60-year-old hiker who has been missing from his family since last Friday.

According to police information, the man from the Lake Constance district had set off on a mountain tour in the area of ​​the Grünstein and the small Watzmann. Officers found his parked car in Schönau and searched the route he had planned to walk. On Tuesday afternoon they found a dead man at an altitude of around 1700 meters on the so-called Watzmannlaabl. The man fell 150 to 200 meters, it said. The circumstances of the accident and the identity of the person are now being determined.

In the first half of 2022 alone, 30 people died in mountain accidents in the Bavarian Alps. The numbers for the whole of 2021 had already reached a sad peak with 55 mountain deaths in the region – it was the highest level since records began in 2009. In previous years, the police counted around 30 to 40 deaths on average.
