Frank-Walter Steinmeier on 75 years of the Basic Law: A celebration as a reminder – opinion

In his speech on the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law, the Federal President not only reminded the Germans to what wonderful document they have owed their freedom for decades. He also called on Germans to prepare for “rougher, tougher years” and to fight for their democracy. Frank-Walter Steinmeier is not an inspiring speaker, and despite some exclamation marks (“Self-assertion, that is the task of the time!”), his tone was more dignified than rousing. However, this tone was well suited to the anniversary of a basic law that embodies calm strength; it was solemn without glorifying.
