Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin warns developers to be “cautious” when combining artificial intelligence (AI) with blockchain technology.
in the blogPost On January 30, Buterin cataloged his most pressing concerns about AI, telling developers “Be careful,” especially when deploying new applications in high-value, high-risk contexts.
“It is important to be careful: if someone creates, for example, a prediction market or stablecoin that uses an AI oracle, and it turns out the oracle can be attacked. Because that’s a huge amount of money that could disappear all of a sudden.”
Buterin explains that one area where AI can excel is in allowing it to participate in mechanisms such as micro-scale prediction markets that might not be possible for humans.
AI can also be used in crypto wallet interfaces for users and help them understand and safely interact with crypto by helping explain transactions and signatures or detecting fraud, according to Buterin writes.
“My own opinion is that pure AI interfaces may be too risky at this time. Because it increases the risk of other types of errors, AI that complements traditional interfaces is starting to have more potential,” he said.
In Buterin’s view, the riskiest efforts are harnessing AI to enforce rules or governance of the crypto system, as open source AI models may be vulnerable to attacks by adversaries.
Open source AI is increasingly vulnerable to adversarial attacks. This is because malicious actors can inspect the code to enhance their attacks. And these models do not provide transparency about how they work or guarantees that they are free of bias.
Worldcoin is an example of closed AI, with Buterin explaining that it relies on “not letting anyone run the AI model” and instead uses “trusted hardware.”
Buterin explains that the biggest challenge is creating decentralized AI using crypto and blockchain that other applications can leverage.
