The first female referee to officiate in the Premier League, Welch made a successful start during the Fulham-Burnley match (0-2). The opportunity was therefore perfect for Vincent Kompany, the Burnley coach, to congratulate her after the match for this great first: “I wanted to congratulate her because beyond the performance, it’s a great moment. When you’re in the match, it’s not the referee that matters, it’s the players. But after the match, we can say that it is an important moment, and I hope there will be many more. The best thing to do will always be to judge people on their merits, but there has to be a first. Bravo, I’m happy to have participated in this moment. »
A long and beautiful statement which contrasts with the words of Marco Silva, the Fulham coach, who said only two words to describe the performance of the woman in black: “Normal performance ».
So, even in the Premier League, our appreciation of the referee will always depend on the final result.
