Video: Webcam video shows explosions in Grunewald

STORY: Dramatic pictures from Berlin’s Grunewald on Thursday morning. Recordings from a building camera show explosions in the middle of the green lungs in the south-west of the federal capital. According to the fire brigade, the first alarm was received around half past three in the early morning. At first there was talk of a pure forest fire, but when the first emergency services arrived, it quickly became clear that there was a fire at the police detonation site. Around 50 tons of explosive ordnance are stored here. According to fire department spokesman Thomas Kirstein, sustained explosions and debris initially forced firefighters to retreat. “We are now deployed here together with the police and the Bundeswehr. A fire-fighting helicopter is deployed. With the support of the Bundeswehr, we will hopefully be able to explore the blast site during the day. That is important for our assessment of the situation, so that we can know if we can get closer.” The fire brigade set up a one-kilometer exclusion zone around the blast site. Several roads, highways and rail traffic were also affected. “According to the current state of knowledge, no one has been injured here. Residential buildings are not affected either. The blasting site is not in the middle of Grunewald for nothing. Residential areas are outside of this 1000 meter mark. Fortunately, our emergency services and other people who are in Grunewald stopped anyone hurt.” According to emergency services, there was a fire in an area of 15,000 square meters. The population was asked not to enter the forest.
