UN court orders Uganda to pay $325 million in reparations to Congo

The International Court of Justice has ordered Uganda to pay $325 million in reparations to Congo over the millennium conflict in Congo’s Ituri province. The UN court based in The Hague was well below the demands of the Democratic Republic of the Congo of more than eleven billion dollars. The sum is to be paid off in five annual tranches of $65 million each starting in September, according to the judgment published on Wednesday. An appeal is not possible. The court first dealt with allegations of fighting in north-eastern Congo in 1999. It ruled in 2005 that Uganda had violated international law by occupying the resource-rich province and supporting armed groups in the 1998-2003 war.
