Video: Turtle “Janus” turns 25

STORY: This somewhat unusual turtle celebrated its 25th birthday on Friday. The name of the reptile is Janus – after the Roman god with the two faces – and at first he wasn’t given much of a chance of survival. But Janus did well: Angelica Bourgoin lovingly takes care of the animal in Geneva’s Natural History Museum. “I put music on every morning to wake him up. I call him, I pet him. I try to stimulate him through the shell, he feels something there, the spine is right here in the middle. I guide him with my fingers to make him look around. And we have really deep interactions. And I think he recognizes my voice.” There will be a birthday party with a surprise present for Janus at the weekend. After all, he is the oldest known double-headed turtle. Although the turtle has two hearts and two pairs of lungs in addition to the two heads, it must always be observed. If she falls on her back, it can quickly be fatal, says Bourgoin. For that reason alone, she hardly ever takes her eyes off Janus.
