Tens of thousands of Sudanese protest against the military again

Tens of thousands of Sudanese people took to the streets in their capital, Khartoum, on Monday to demonstrate again against the October military coup. Participants in the demonstration waved national flags and chanted slogans against the military. The march through the capital over the Nile to the neighboring town of Omdurman was peaceful. At least 44 people were killed in the crackdown on protests in the weeks following the coup. Three years ago, insurgents overthrew long-time President Omar al-Bashir. Since then, power has been shared between the military and the civilian population. The United States, Germany and other Western countries had condemned the coup and called for a civilian-led transition to democracy. Economic aid was also suspended.
