Video: Streetboys Munich – gay football team kicks for more tolerance

STORY: Setting a sign is not that difficult for the Streetboys players. It all starts with showing your colors with the shoelaces – but it doesn’t stop there. Board member Christoph Hertzsch explains how the team came about: “The “Team Munich Streetboys” have been around for 30 years now, and were then simply founded as a leisure group from the community. Because gay football players didn’t feel very safe in other clubs back then and that’s why they got together here in Munich. And the whole club grew out of that and we’ve been playing in the entire league for 20 years now. More or less successful, but with a lot of fun!” Because the team plays in district class C in the DFB league. It’s well known and no longer has to struggle with homophobic statements, as captain Louis Steinle reports: “I’ve been with the Streetboys for three years now. Twenty years ago, when the club was founded, things were a little different. We’ve had more problems like this. We are now all no longer strangers. Well, we’ve played against most of them before and we know what to expect. But, yes, meanwhile you’re actually very well accepted there.” The example of “Team Munich Streetsboys” shows that it takes courage and continuity, among other things, to get things moving. And if that is possible in district class C, then one can only hope that the DFB will still manage to send a clear signal at the current World Cup in Qatar. After all, respect and tolerance should be a matter of course everywhere.
