It doesn’t matter whether it’s YouTube, Netflix or a media library: German consumers don’t want to do without video entertainment from the Internet.

The streaming of video content such as short clips, series or films is now so firmly established in the lives of many Germans that they can hardly imagine having to do without it. This is suggested by a current survey by the Bitkom digital association. “Anytime, anywhere: streaming now plays an important role in people’s everyday lives,” says Dr. Sebastian Klöß, Head of Consumer Technology at Bitkom, quoted in a statement.

A representative survey of 1,163 people aged 16 and over – including 1,012 Internet users – revealed that 38 percent of consumers who stream videos on the Internet also do so on a daily basis. Another 46 percent can be entertained in this way several times a week. Basically, 75 percent of the citizens surveyed streamed video content – an increase of five percentage points compared to the previous year. In the case of Internet users, the figure is even 87 percent.

YouTube far ahead of Disney+ and DAZN

Portals such as YouTube, Twitch or Vimeo, which are used by 85 percent of the Internet users surveyed, are at the forefront in terms of popularity – an increase of six percent compared to 2021. In contrast, the time-delayed viewing of content that has already been shown on TV loses six percentage points . However, it is still in second place with 71 percent.

Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and the other streaming services achieve 61 percent with films and series such as “The Gray Man” or “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and 41 percent stream clips on social networks such as Instagram and TikTok . The streaming of the currently running TV program still brings it to 37 percent with a minus of seven points and sports offers such as DAZN or the Eurosport Player use 25 percent.

Television still widespread

“The number of offers is growing steadily. Apart from the streaming offers of the television stations, all streaming options have become even more popular compared to 2021,” explains Klöß. Nevertheless, 91 percent of all those surveyed stated that they at least occasionally zapped into television via satellite, antenna or cable.

As expected, older people in particular are well-disposed towards TV. 97 percent over the age of 65 tune in, while only 32 percent of those in this group stream video online. 95 percent of 50 to 64 year olds still watch TV now and again, 89 percent of 30 to 49 year olds and 80 percent of 16 to 29 year olds.
