Video: Runoff election in the US state of Georgia

STORY: In the US state of Georgia, a runoff election will decide today, Tuesday, whether President Joe Biden’s Democrats can expand their wafer-thin majority in the Senate. Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock is up against ex-President Donald Trump-backed former football pro Herschel Walker. Should the Baptist pastor and first black senator from Georgia hold his own, the Democrats in the Senate in Washington would have 51 of the 100 seats in the future. On the other hand, if his Republican challenger Walker wins, it will remain a 50-50 tie, as in the past two years. In the event of a stalemate, Biden’s deputy Kamala Harris, who as vice president is also the chair of the Senate, still has the decisive vote. The runoff election became necessary because in the nationwide midterm elections a month ago in the US southern state, none of the candidates received the required absolute majority. A tight finish is expected this time as well. The first results are expected on Wednesday night.
