Video: Riots in Senegal’s parliament

STORY: Tensed atmosphere in Senegal’s parliament on Monday: opposition MPs rioted and threw bottles – apparently to disrupt the election of a new President of the National Assembly. The assembly met for the first time since the July election, in which President Macky Sall’s ruling coalition lost its comfortable majority, winning just two seats more than two allied opposition coalitions. There had been violent clashes throughout the day, and late in the evening tensions boiled over. Finally, the police and military had to intervene to calm the situation. Some MPs were arrested. They had tried to seize the ballot box.
