Rhineland-Palatinate honors Biontech founders

The Biontech founders Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci have been awarded the State Order of Merit of Rhineland-Palatinate. Prime Minister Malu Dreyer praised the merits of the two doctors on Wednesday at a ceremony in the State Chancellery in Mainz: “You didn’t see the resistance and risks. You might have seen them, but you consciously took them on. You had deep trust in science and yours own research and they also felt the obligation in this emerging global crisis to do everything possible to help people as quickly as possible.” Biontech has developed the world’s first SARS-CoV2 vaccine to be officially approved. It is based on research on mRNA that the two scientists carried out before the pandemic. The State Order of Merit is the highest award that Rhineland-Palatinate can bestow. Biontech has its headquarters in the state capital of Mainz.
