Relaxation in the ambassadorial dispute with Turkey

In the ambassador dispute between Turkey and several Western countries, the situation eased on Monday evening. The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said after a meeting of his cabinet in the afternoon: “With a new declaration, the messages of slandering our country and our nation have taken a step back.” Before Erdogan’s statement, the US embassy and several others announced that they had adhered to a diplomatic convention not to interfere in the internal affairs of a host country. Canada, the Netherlands, and New Zealand each sent a similar message. The relaxation on the foreign exchange market led to the recovery of the Turkish lira, which had previously tumbled from record low to record low. The currency has lost almost a quarter of its value this year.
