Video: Peru declares a state of emergency over protests against Castillo’s ouster

STORY: The riots and violent protests in Peru continued on Wednesday. In the southern city of Juliaca, demonstrators attempted to storm the international airport grounds. Again there were calls for new elections. It’s about the removal of leftist President Pedro Castillo. He was taken into police custody last week. He is accused of rebellion and conspiracy for attempting to dissolve parliament to avoid impeachment. His arrest sparked nationwide protests that turned violent in many places. Authorities say eight people have died, most of them teenagers. Defense Minister Alberto Otarola declared a state of emergency for the next 30 days on Wednesday. The measure allows soldiers to support the police in maintaining public safety. A demonstrator in the capital Lima accused the government of wanting to silence the people. “We are angry with everything that is happening here. That is why we are here and demanding that Congress be closed and that the current President, Dina Boluarte, resign; she is not representing us.” Vice President Boluarte was sworn in as the new head of state after Castillo was ousted. However, Castillo’s supporters do not want to give her the full term until 2026. Boluarte announced on Monday that he would bring the elections forward by two years to April 2024. In the meantime, she has brought another date in December 2023 into play.
