Löw visits the Federal President

Large train station in honor of Joachim Löw. The former German national soccer coach of the men’s team, Joachim “Jogi” Löw, was welcomed by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Wednesday as thanks for his many years of work with the DFB team. Löw was invited to a festive lunch at Bellevue Palace in Berlin. He resigned after the recent European Championship, which he had held since 2006 and thus around 15 years. This means that Löw has the longest term of office of any previous national coach. Löw had a contract until 2022. He led Germany to the 2014 World Cup and the 2017 Confederations Cup, but at the 2018 World Cup his team was eliminated in the group stage and had difficulties playing at the highest level for the past three years. The now 61-year-old Löw joined the team in 2004 as Jürgen Klinsmann’s assistant before taking over in 2006. Now, in 2021, with the “Merkel era”, the similarly long and in some respects parallel “Löw era” will come to an end.
