STORY: In the Kimberley region in the state of Western Australia, large areas of land have been flooded for days. Numerous towns are cut off from the outside world. The town of Fitzroy Crossing, with its approximately 1,300 inhabitants, is now supplied from the air, the authorities said. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Saturday (7 January) his government was ready to provide the state of Western Australia with any assistance needed to help the affected people quickly. Severe storms had led to heavy rainfall in north-western Australia in the past few days. In recent years, severe flooding has increasingly occurred in the east of the country due to the “la nina” weather phenomenon. The area of the Kimberley region is almost as large as Germany and Austria together. According to the authorities, the current floods are the worst ever recorded there.
