Video: Iran executes ex-deputy defense minister Akbari

STORY: The British-Iranian dual national Aliresa Akbari has been executed in Iran after being convicted of espionage. Iranian media reported this on Saturday. The Misan news agency reported that Akbari worked for the British secret service and, among other things, allowed himself to be corrupted for 1.8 million euros. In a recording broadcast by the BBC on Wednesday, Akbari said he had confessed to crimes he had not committed after being severely tortured. Britain threatened Iran with consequences. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tweeted that he was “horrified,” calling the execution a callous and cowardly act by a barbaric regime. Akbari was formerly Deputy Minister of Defense of the Islamic Republic. Iranian media circulated on Thursday that he played a role in the 2020 murder of nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrisadeh. A video was also broadcast in which Akbari stated that he was not involved in the murder. However, a British spy questioned him about Fakhrisadeh. Reuters could not verify the authenticity of the footage.
