Gysi appeals: “Outlaw this war” – in Russian

STORY: “I beg you outlaw this war.” With the appeal to outlaw the war in Ukraine and to do everything in their power to end it, the foreign policy spokesman for the left-wing faction in the Bundestag, Gregor Gysi, says he is addressing both Russian citizens and citizens the members of Russian communities in this country. In the approximately five-minute recording, he calls on people, among other things, to show the Russian government that the war is not being waged in their name. However, according to Gysi, he knows that it is “significantly more difficult in Moscow” to “take to the streets and protest the war than in Berlin.” The member of the Bundestag and lawyer is thus clearly positioning himself. Parts of his party have repeatedly been accused of being uncritically close to Russia. In the video uploaded to the Left Party’s YouTube page, 74-year-old Gysi also admits that he finds it difficult to speak. As a child he was given the image of the USSR as a peace power.
