Foreign fighters: serving alongside Ukrainian soldiers
STORY: The invasion of Ukraine by Russian military has also attracted non-Ukrainian fighters to join the military. The army released footage on Monday, which purportedly shows a volunteer from Mexico and one from Britain, both of whom are said to have joined the Ukrainian army in the Kyiv region, which was still under Russian fire earlier in the week. “I’m fighting for democracy because it’s valuable and one country shouldn’t be allowed to take it from another,” said the British man, whose name was not released. Last week, President Zelenskyi announced that around 16,000 foreign volunteers had volunteered to serve alongside Ukrainian soldiers. These would serve in an “international legion”.
