Escape from Mariupol: ceasefire evidently not observed
STORY: Images of the destruction from Bila Tserkva, 85 kilometers from Kyiv. They were issued by Ukrainian police who reported on Saturday Russian airstrikes on the city. Fighting was also reported from Mariupol and Volnowakha on Saturday. A safe departure of civilians would have been scheduled for both cities on Saturday. However, Russia is not complying with the necessary and agreed ceasefire, said Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Wereschuk. Local authorities in Mariupol accused Russian troops of not honoring the ceasefire along the entire corridor. An evacuation must therefore be postponed. People were asked to seek shelter in the city again. The Russian Defense Ministry, on the other hand, said that Ukrainian “nationalists” prevented civilians from retreating. Russian soldiers were fired on after they had set up corridors out of the encircled towns.
Russia and Ukraine accused each other on Saturday of thwarting plans to evacuate people from two war-torn cities.
