Climate activists block tracks

They are protesting against open-cast lignite mining and lignite power plants. Around 40 climate activists blocked the supply of coal to the Neurath lignite power plant in Grevenbroich in North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday morning. Some chained themselves to the tracks or to cement blocks in the track bed. The reason for the protests is the World Climate Conference in Glasgow. A spokesman for the activists said: “Of course we hope that we can stay as long as possible. That depends on how quickly the police evacuate us. We are definitely interested in making an effective blockade to put a stop to RWE To do the math so that at least for this time they can no longer make profits with the dirty coal. ” According to the police, the officers asked the activists to voluntarily leave the track bed. But they refused. The mood was relaxed and peaceful, said a spokesman. The Neurath power plant is supplied with lignite from the Garzweiler opencast mine via the blocked track. Last weekend, thousands of people demonstrated against further excavation there, as the village of Lützerath and five other localities would have to give way for the expansion of the opencast mine.
