Explosion in Aden kills several people

At least six people were killed in an explosion near the airport building in the city of Aden in Yemen, according to security sources. At least 12 deaths were reported in other reports. The detonation had occurred on Saturday evening. At least twenty people were reportedly injured. Airport employees reported that a small truck or van exploded. According to local authorities, the car was loaded with petroleum products. At first it was unclear whether it was an attack. In December 2020, more than twenty people were killed in an attack at Aden airport. An international United Nations investigation concluded that rebels had launched missiles. Aden is currently the provisional seat of government in the country. The capital Sanaa, like the north of the country, is occupied by the Houthi rebels. At the end of 2014, the rebels overthrew the internationally recognized President Abd-Rabbu Mansur Hadi, who was supported by Saudi Arabia and whom they accused of corruption and mismanagement. In 2015, Saudi Arabia joined the conflict and forged the Sunni alliance. The ultra-conservative Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Iran, which sees itself as the protective power of the Shiites, have been wrestling for supremacy in the region for years and are fighting a proxy war in the completely impoverished Yemen.
