“Very extraordinary”: This is what experts say about the snow chaos in Bavaria – Bavaria

Large amounts of snow within a few hours, rail traffic interrupted for days, roads closed, schools closed, Jachenau at least officially cut off from the outside world – memories of January 2019 are coming back in southern Bavaria these days. At that time, heavy snowfalls practically paralyzed public life in some regions on the edge of the Alps. Several district administrators had declared a disaster, the fire brigades were in constant operation, soldiers and members of the technical relief organization from all over Bavaria were clearing the roofs deep in the south. Nobody has yet assigned the status of a catastrophe to last weekend’s snowfall, and the “snow chaos” on the streets is almost mandatory at the first onset of winter anyway. But how unusual is so much snow at the beginning of December?
