VanMoof 2023 – new S4 & X4 e-bikes focus on simplicity above all

The S4 & X4 e-bikes from VanMoof are brand new and continue what was started in 2014 with the first electrically assisted model. Instead of presenting the next innovative feature, the Dutch manufacturer goes back to its roots and presents a modernized version of its most successful model to date, including new, fresh colors. The proven concept remains the same, we’ve looked at the details for our readers.

VanMoof S4 & X4 at a glance

The new VanMoof S4 & X4 models found their way to the public today, after the brand from Amsterdam has been announcing the upcoming innovations several times lately. The pictures shown were not that far from reality, because the manufacturer is thinking about the tried and tested and is basically simply relaunching its successful model.

However, it goes one step further in the direction of simplicity and thus dispenses with elements that hardcore fans of VanMoof may have become too accustomed to. The significant frame shape was therefore only slightly changed, but now no longer has a matrix display, for example.

The drive has remained the same, the new S4 & X4 models are also offered with the 59 Nm front-wheel drive with RPM sensor. However, the battery has shrunk a bit compared to the previous models and now has a capacity of 478 Wh, which according to VanMoof should provide a range of up to 150 km.

The smartphone should now serve as a display, for which an SP Connect bracket was incorporated on the one-piece handlebar. Very important is the turbo button on the handlebars, which can be used to access the maximum drive power and allows the e-bike to climb steeper climbs surprisingly quickly.

As with other VanMoof models, a one-piece saddle is also installed, which can severely limit the individual adjustment for the universally usable model, as we had already criticized in our test of the VanMoof S2.

The drive comes with the mechanical two-speed shifter that was introduced with the S3 & X3. The switchover works automatically and depends on the speed, with the drive train being completely encapsulated as usual by the manufacturer.

The hydraulic brakes, unfortunately still too small in diameter, can also be found on the brand new S4 & X4 models from VanMoof. At least these are now perforated and should, at least theoretically, dissipate the heat generated faster.

For security, the 4th generation of the electromechanical kick lock is installed, which activates the integrated anti-theft function when it is used. The e-bike is also located via GSM, comes with a movement alarm and can be paralyzed over a distance. If all else fails, the VanMoof Bike Hunters go on tour and bring the e-bike back.

Also on board: Integrated lighting system with 40 lux front light, 4th generation puncture-proof tires and stand. The X4 also comes with a luggage rack with tension belt, while a front luggage rack is available as an option for the S4. Similar accessories are also available for the rear, just like the additional battery called the power bank, which at 378 Wh almost doubles the capacity. Pannier bags complete the program.

Conclusion

With the new S4 & X4 models, VanMoof is focusing on what works and what the Dutch say you really need. Mechanical instead of electronic gear shifting, speed-controlled drive with turbo boost instead of complex, dynamic motor control and smartphone instead of a complex hidden display in the frame. The battery capacity should cover the radius of most customers, but can still be easily expanded, just as the e-bike can be adapted to the respective application with accessories. In addition, you can expect a cheaper entry-level price during these times. The downside, as with all VanMoof e-bikes, is the use of many proprietary components that you can only get from the brand itself, so you have to rely on their repair service if the worst comes to the worst. We are excited to see how customers will accept the new series.
