Four years ago, a US high school student attacked a school police officer with a barbecue fork. The officer defended himself by firing shots from the service weapon. Now the student has been sentenced to a long prison term.

A 20-year-old Wisconsin man has been jailed for 17 years for attacking a school police officer with a barbecue fork four years ago. The incident happened at Oshkosh West High School in December 2019. The then 16-year-old Grant F. announced his crime in a text message to a friend.

As reported by the Associated Press news agency, among others, he bets with the student that he would go into the officer’s office, attack him with a pencil and then yank his gun from his holster to shoot the officer or himself.

In fact, the next morning the boy grabbed a grill fork from his kitchen and went to school with it. He entered the school police officer’s office and stabbed the man multiple times in the neck. The officer fell to the ground. Unable to use his taser, he drew his service pistol and shot the student twice. Both suffered only minor injuries in the fight. The stabbing and shooting resulted in the evacuation of the school.

In February, the now 20-year-old was tried. A judge announced the sentence on Monday. In addition to the 17 years in prison, Grant F. must spend 10 years under extended custody and meet a number of conditions.

In the courtroom, he tearfully asked the now-retired police officer for forgiveness. However, he was unaware of the apology as he left the courtroom after giving a statement to the judge. In it he explained, among other things: “This was to be a homicidal killing spree. It was a well thought out, well planned attack in which he used our good relationship to fool me.”
