USA: Congress buys itself 45 days – and sacrifices aid to Ukraine

Democrats and Republicans in the USA agree on a bridge budget. A shutdown has been averted for now, but the price is high. Ukraine is not getting any new money – and there is a threat of chaos in the House of Representatives.

Is the man relieved? Or is he afraid of what could happen to him in the next few days? When Kevin McCarthy appeared in front of the cameras on Saturday evening, it had only been a few minutes since 209 Democrats and 126 Republicans in the House of Representatives voted for a stopgap budget. For days it looked as if no agreement would be possible in the budget dispute and a shutdown seemed unstoppable. A few hours before the deadline, there was finally a bipartisan compromise. A success for McCarthy? At first glance perhaps, he could still lose his job.
