A day after US air strikes against pro-Iranian militias in Iraq and Syria, the American military shelled Houthi positions in Yemen. Together with several other nations, 36 targets of the Houthi militia were attacked.
With air strikes on Houthi militia positions in Yemen, the USA has again taken action against an Iranian-backed group in the Middle East. After attacking more than 85 targets linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in Iraq and Syria, the US and Britain said they bombed 36 targets in 13 locations in Yemen on Saturday. Weapon depots and guided missile facilities were hit. The airstrikes carried out together with Great Britain were supported by Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands and New Zealand.
The USA justified the new attack with the repeated shelling of international ships off the Yemeni coast by the Houthis. “This joint action sends a clear message to the Houthis that they will face further consequences if they do not end their unlawful attacks on international civilian and military vessels,” said US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps spoke of an act of self-defense covered by international law.
Iranian Revolutionary Guards in sight
After the violent deaths of three US soldiers in the Middle East, the American military said it had recently attacked more than 85 targets in Iraq and Syria that were linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. More than 30 people were reportedly killed in retaliatory strikes against the Guards and allied militias. Iran, Iraq, Syria and Russia condemned the US air strikes.
