Instead of a fish, Connor Halsa from Minnesota, USA, pulled a wallet out of the water. He waived a finder’s fee.

14-year-old Connor Halsa from Minnesota recently had an extraordinary catch on his hook: while fishing with his family in the “Lake of the Woods” he pulled in instead of a fish wallet out of the water. Inside: $2,000 in cash.

When it pulled on his fishing rod, Halsa thought it was a big fish, he told WDay-TV. His cousin helped him retrieve it – and found they had found a wallet that was soaked and covered in moss. “Then we took out the money and put everything on the dashboard to let it dry,” Halsa told the broadcaster.

Also in the wallet they found a business card with the phone number of the owner: Jim Denney, a farmer from Iowa. “My dad said we should give it to the person, so I said we should do that too,” said the 14-year-old.

The owner of the purse was also on a fishing trip on Lake of the Woods about a year ago, ABC 7 reports. According to Denney, the boat rocked a lot at the time – so the wallet probably just slipped out.

The probability that it would be found was extremely low: After all, the “Lake of the Woods” has an area of 4349 km² – that corresponds to more than 609,000 football pitches. “It’s still hard for me to believe that,” said the farmer.

Denney personally picked up his wallet from the Halsa family. Although he offered the money to 14-year-old Connor as a finder’s fee, he refused. The teenager was modest: “We didn’t work hard for the money, he did.”

However, Denney did not want to give up a reward and gave the teenager a personalized cool box – and a few warm words: “I would take Connor as a grandson at any time and I would fight for him at any time,” affirmed Denney.
