Amazon is a synonym for online trading for many. But now the group wants to open department stores, according to a media report. Accordingly, clothing, technology and household goods are to be sold there.

According to a media report, the world’s largest online retailer Amazon wants to open larger stores in the style of department stores. The first branches are to go to the start in California and Ohio, wrote the “Wall Street Journal”, citing insiders. However, Amazon did not want to confirm this when asked.

Clothing and technology

However, such an advance would not come as a complete surprise. Amazon may have grown up as a seller of everything on the Internet, but has also been shaking up traditional retail for a number of years. Founded in 1994 by star entrepreneur Jeff Bezos, the group operates grocery chains under brands such as Amazon Fresh and Amazon-4-Star and also has smaller stores for books and other products. Amazon also owns the US supermarket chain Whole Foods.

With larger stores, Amazon could also place its clothing, household and technology offerings more outside the Internet. Amazon has recently become the largest seller of clothing in the United States. According to the Wells Fargo Bank, the group has overtaken the supermarket chain Walmart here. In addition, the return of goods should also be handled in the shops.

Smaller than average department stores

According to the “Wall Street Journal”, the branches with an area of around 2800 square meters would be significantly larger than Amazon’s previous retail stores, but much smaller than average department stores in the USA. The report did not contain any specific information on the timetable.
