Upper Palatinate in Bavaria: Around 30 buildings damaged – suspected tornado – Bavaria

Around 30 buildings in the Neumarkt district in Upper Palatinate were damaged by weather. The Upper Palatinate police headquarters spoke of a “wind storm” in Berching on Friday morning. Whether this was the case late Thursday evening could not be confirmed in the morning. The German Weather Service (DWD), which had warned of possible tornadoes on Thursday evening, was also initially unavailable. Apart from the Upper Palatinate, there were no major operations in Bavaria, the presidiums said upon request.

The storm in Berching damaged around 20 agricultural buildings and ten residential buildings, said a fire department spokesman. In addition to roof damage, windows were also broken by roof tiles and garage doors were torn out. A chimney also fell down. Investigators were initially unable to estimate the extent of the damage. In Schirmitz (Neustadt an der Waldnaab district), a smaller storm blew some tiles off the roofs but caused little damage, a police spokesman said. At the weekend, the DWD expected only light winds, but early summer temperatures of up to 30 degrees.
