Upper Franconia: Fraudsters make prey twice with accident scams – Bavaria

Fraudsters in Upper Franconia have stolen money and valuables twice using the so-called accident scam. Overall, the damage from the incidents on Tuesday amounted to a low six-figure sum, as the police announced on Wednesday.

Around midday, fraudsters called a 58-year-old from Frensdorf (Bamberg district). They alleged that the woman’s daughter caused a traffic accident. The 58-year-old was supposed to pay bail so that her daughter wouldn’t go to prison. A little later, a man picked up items with a value in the five-figure range from the woman’s address.

Using the same scam, fraudsters convinced a 68-year-old from Bayreuth to give up a supposed deposit in order to supposedly save his wife from imprisonment. At a parking lot on Tuesday afternoon, an unknown person first picked up money and later valuables. The criminal police are investigating the incidents in Frensdorf and Bayreuth and are looking for possible witnesses.
