It is one of the noblest tasks of Bavarian politicians to open the respective season of pleasure with a strong visual impact. Cutting asparagus, picking strawberries, plucking hops, nothing that a Minister of Agriculture or a Minister President would not have mastered. Gladly with product queen and subsequent tasting.
The carp season starts on September 1st, so in Markt Thierstein (Wunsiedel district) Markus Söder climbed into the pond himself in waist-high rubber pants and fished. Check out his social media profiles. In addition, the song of praise for the carp, which he already liked to eat as a child, “preferably baked”, and the thanks to the pond owners, “they take care of the culture with their work”.
However, after the work was done, there was no carp for Söder on Thursday, nor for Minister of Agriculture Michaela Kaniber and the other guests of honor. Because the pond keepers, whose carp pond farming is part of the intangible cultural heritage, feel left alone by politics – and instead overrun by the otter. They demand more measures against the animals. A “cry for help to politicians” is the action, as the state fishing association announced. There is nothing to read about it in Söders Posts.
Did the protest actually work? Instead of carp, the politicians were served Schäufele. And that is not a Franconian specialty that should be despised.
