Unterschleißheim – driving instructor protests against Tempo 30 – district of Munich

Rudi Eberl has been a driving instructor for almost 50 years. And he’s seen a lot in that time. But now he’s repeatedly confronted with what he sees as a one-off blunder, leading him to conclude: “Sometimes we’re ruled by the ignorant.” The hard judgment of the self-confessed CSU member refers to the 30 km/h zone introduced in the summer on Alleestrasse in Unterschleißheim. There, the SPD, Greens and ÖDP decided to reduce the maximum speed in order to offer pedestrians and, above all, cyclists more safety, who cannot find an adequate cycle path there. But when it comes to implementing the traffic regulations, things have been crunching for a long time. And again and again protest calls are heard.

These often come from the corner of the CSU. Group leader Stefan Krimmer has opposed the stricter speed limit from the start, which he believes is an example of an ideologically guided policy that he rejects. And in Rudi Eberl, someone jumps to his side who argues with his daily experiences. The problem in the street, which is heavily used as a so-called collecting street to the district street: There should be right before left because of the zone regulation. But there is a regular bus service, which is contrary to this. Because the bus does not drive along the entire street, the right-before-left rule has only applied from Johann-Schmid-Straße for a few weeks.

From Eberl’s point of view, this is in no way practical. He says it’s no coincidence that Alleestrasse is referred to as a “collective street”. Police and MVV would have rejected Tempo 30. “There have already been a significant number of near-accidents, until it really crashes here is only a matter of time!”
