Unterföhring – town hall will be finished later – district of Munich

It will probably take a little longer than originally planned before the town hall administration of the municipality of Unterföhring can move into its new domicile. As the current status of planning shows, the ambitious new building will probably not be ready for occupancy until 2027 instead of 2026 as previously planned. There will also be some changes compared to previous plans.

The approximately 200 square meter canteen will probably be omitted, instead there are considerations for an entrance with a café area, possibly accessible to employees and citizens. The planners also questioned the two-storey underground car park, for reasons of cost as well as for environmental reasons. The necessary parking spaces could alternatively be created on the park-and-ride facility at the S-Bahn station or in an extension of the existing underground car park of the adult education center. The planners will also develop new ideas for the meeting room.

The new construction of the town hall is a “project of the century” for Unterföhring, said Mayor Andreas Kemmelmeyer. The time shift in this planning stage is fine given that the project has really been thought through. The 11,000-inhabitant community north of Munich has big plans for its new town hall; it should serve as a role model, particularly in the aspects of sustainability and the modern world of work. To this end, the municipality has hired numerous well-known experts as consultants, including Natalie Eßig, Professor of Building Construction and Building Climate at Munich University of Applied Sciences.

The architects’ office Raum und Bau Planungsgesellschaft from Munich was commissioned to plan the project. The cost of the new building, which, in addition to modern offices for the almost 160 administrative staff, will also contain social and consulting rooms, has been estimated at around 49 million euros. In July 2022, Mayor Kemmelmeyer signed the architect contract for the project in the 47-year-old town hall from 1975. At that time there was still talk of moving in in 2026.
